Hi There Glasgow!

I’m going to try something a little different this week.

I’ll be sending out the issues the night before at 7-8pm. This one is going out Sunday night for Monday and Tuesday.

I’ll sending out the mid-week one on Tuesday night for Wednesday and Thursday, and then the weekend edition on Thursday night for Friday-Sunday.

Let me know your thoughts on it and if you prefer that time rather than around 10am on the day.

In todays Glasgow Digest:

  • TRNSMT food vendor had a day he’ll never forget

  • Your local fire station could be closing

  • Police legally raise £18,582 for a good cause

  • And the events coming up this week

A Food Vendor’s Biggest Opening Day Yet

Glasgow Live

He served pasta to thousands hours after becoming a dad 🍝

Most people would take the day off.

Jude Smith, 35, from Uddingston, was due to open his pasta truck Sonny's at TRNSMT on Friday. Then his wife Lauri went into labour at 1am.

Their daughter was born at 5.45am. By midday, Jude was behind the counter at Glasgow Green serving fresh Italian food to festival-goers, running on no sleep and a few hours' worth of adrenaline.

The truck itself is named after his two-year-old son, Sonny, who inspired the whole idea. So Jude spent Friday becoming a father for the second time and feeding thousands of strangers, in the same twelve hours.

He told reporters: "My wife was a week overdue, she went into labour at 1am on Friday. So on Thursday night I stayed up all night and then had to come in here on Friday and done a full shift."

No nap. No day off. Just queues of hungry festival-goers and a phone full of newborn photos.

It's the kind of story that makes you wonder what you'd actually do in his position. Most of us would like to think we'd have called in sick. Jude served pasta.

Congratulations to Jude, Lauri, Sonny, and the newest member of the family.

Yorkhill Fire Station Could Close This Week

Glasgow's fire service shake-up reaches its final decision point.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service board meets Monday, 22 June, to decide on changes affecting more than 30 fire stations across Scotland. One of the recommendations directly affects Glasgow.

Here's what's on the table:

  • Rebuild Cowcaddens fire station on the adjacent Maitland Street site and reinstate its second engine

  • Close Yorkhill fire station entirely

  • Cut the second fire engine at Govan and at Springburn

  • Reinstate the second engine at Maryhill

SFRS says the city currently has more fire cover than other large urban areas in Scotland, and that Yorkhill's coverage area could be handled by Calton, Maryhill, Springburn and Cowcaddens instead. Local campaigners and the Fire Brigades Union disagree, pointing to job losses and longer response times.

It is a decision worth watching, particularly if you live or work near Yorkhill, Cowcaddens, Govan, or Springburn.

George Square's North Road Is Finally Reopening

If the diversions have been driving you up the wall, there's an end date now.

The installation of new granite setts on the north side of George Square is set to finish by 5pm on June 26.

Here's what changes once it's done:

  • Vehicles will be able to travel from West George Street and North Hanover Street along the new carriageway and onto George Street

  • Private cars get access to the new carriageway between 7pm and 7am

  • Vehicular access to the lower end of North Frederick Street follows in late July, once junction works there are finished

The whole George Square redevelopment remains on track to finish by August 2026, so this is one of the final pieces falling into place.

Worth knowing if you've been avoiding the city centre because of the diversions. Relief is close.

54 Officers, 23 Miles, One Brilliant Reason

Glasgow Times

Some teams build morale with a pizza night. Police Scotland's G Division decided to walk nearly a marathon instead.

More than 50 officers took on the Glasgow Kiltwalk's 22.7-mile Mighty Stride on April 26 to raise money for Maggie's Glasgow, a cancer support charity based at the Beatson.

Inspector Alan Burrell originally hoped to recruit 30 officers. He ended up with 54, many of whom have been personally affected by cancer themselves.

Here's what they pulled off:

  • £18,582 raised through bake sales, sweepstakes and football cards

  • Enough to fund Maggie's Glasgow centre for more than a week

  • The team has since visited the centre to see the support services in action firsthand

Inspector Burrell said the walk was about more than fundraising. It gave officers a focus for their own wellbeing and brought the team together.

Maggie's Glasgow runs entirely on donations, so days like this genuinely keep the centre's doors open.

If you fancy your own Kiltwalk, the next one's worth keeping an eye on.
